Guinea Pigs Gone to the Rainbow Bridge

It is said that when we lose a friend, there is a new star in the sky at night. On these cold, bleak Winter nights I look up, and through my tears I see the stars of a constellation twinkling in the sky. I hope your spirits run free, dashing and playing in meadows of sweet timothy grass, with cool waters to sip and sweet fruits to nibble and play with. May you have places to explore, treats beyond measure, and cardboard to nibble. To all our gentle beloved piggies, we will always love you.

        - T. Green, 1996

WIGGY: Beloved Wiggy, who taught us that yes, guinea pigs can jump. He loved an occasional bite of Godiva chocolate; adored raspberry sorbet. Little 10 pm squeaker ("it's alfalfa and Tiggy Treat time!") (and only 3 seconds to dump the dish!), never afraid to try any food (except lemons, which gave us the expression "Wiggy Lips").

YUBB: Little "Banjo Butt", who the "Yubb Spot" is named for, delighted in flipping and eating strawberries, and playing with small wooden toys. Little bucking bronco when playing with his flapping penguin, he always did "once around the cage" before eating.

SQUEEP: Sweet pig with velvet ears who loved sipping half & half from a spoon. He drank cider from his own glass. Little snuggler that gave wet piggie kisses on my nose.

SWEETCHEEKS: Fat bouncy companion of Squeep, he was not much of a "people pig". Sweetcheeks had the sweetest smile. We would let Squeep and Sweetcheeks run together and then tell them to "go home" and the two of them would head toward their room. The last thing you would see was Sweetcheeks' fat little butt bounding across the carpet.

BOOP: Poor little roan evicted by Squeep & Sweetcheeks, he lived happily with Hamlet. Sweet little chocolate faced pig. The rest of his coloring was sort of dalmation, except chocolate and white.

HAMLET: Brave little wall-eyed Teddy who willingly took cranberry juice from a dropper for his bladder problem. Tender little nibbles on my thumb, when I cry "He's biting me! Ow! Ow!" he stops and kisses. Hamlet never tired of reading the guinea pig care book, and loved gazing at the color drawing of the pig mite.

PIGGMOPP: Who had a striking resemblance to Yosemite Sam.

PIGGALOON: Crabby little pig that didn't like people all that much.

PIGG NEWTON: Hamlet's other companion, the "spokespig". Pigg Newton could hear the fridge door open from behind closed doors; the click of a knife on a cutting board at a hundred paces. Wild wheeps and big smiles.

BUTTERBALL: Beautiful little cream colored self piggy whose life was much too short.

MINI PIGG: Sweet little woodchip bulldozer, long haired Coronet that delighted in giving haircuts. Wonderful little snuggler and shoulder sitter; I still call Pigxie by your name.

RALPH: Big Ralph D'Pigg. Rescued from being a meal for a snake, he had Squeep's ears and Sweetcheeks' smile. "Fat Ralph" as our parrot says; delighted in corn silk and green beans. Poor Ralph, for the first eight months of his life in the pet store he didn't know what vegetables were, as the only treat he'd gotten was an occasional bite of bagel. After he came to live with us and learned about vegetables there was no stopping him, but it sure took awhile! Ralph would almost flip backwards when you stroked his head.

And to EDGAR and SPOOKY who started it all.

We miss all of you. We laugh at times to think back on your antics; then we cry knowing you are gone.

        Tex & Donna
